Wisconsin Holstein Association Wisconsin Holstein

Cow Camp: 2014 Recap

The 2014 Cow Camp was held on Saturday and Sunday, May 3 and 4, 2014, at the Sugar Creek Bible Camp, Ferryville, Wis. Over 80 youth attended the two-day event, which featured a variety of workshops focusing on Wisconsin Holstein programs, general cow health, and dairy knowledge and trivia.

Camp kicked off on Saturday, May 3, with games and getting to know members of the WHA Junior Activities Committee. The afternoon activities following introductions included lessons from nutrition expert Kevin Larson on how to feed calves, photo editing by Kathy DeBruin, t-shirt tie-dye tutorial and a showmanship clinic from Brian Coyne.

After a great afternoon of sessions, campers enjoyed a hike and home-cooked meal. The evening concluded with the princess' scavenger hunt, some dairy bowl fun and dairy olympics. The crew hit the hay after some time at the campfire.

On Sunday morning, the campers were again taken through workshops that included a demonstration from veterinarian Matt Dorshorst, a lesson in first aid from Molly Dorshorst, farm safety from the JACs, and what to pack in the show box, another demo from the JACs.

The camp concluded with the famous ag olympics and group photos.

The Association would like to thank our industry experts Matt Dorshorst, Kevin Larson, Kathy DeBruin, Brian Coyne, and Molly Dorshorst, as well as our event sponsors Badgerland Financial, Animart and East Central/Select Sires for their support!

With another successful Cow Camp in the books, its time to start thinking about next year! Stay tuned for information on the 2015 WHA Cow Camp and how to join in on the fun!
