Cow Camp Educates Junior Holstein Members

2012 Cow Campers Baraboo, Wis. — May 24, 2012 —The Wisconsin Holstein Association held its annual Cow Camp May 19 & 20, 2012 at the Pine Lake Camp in Waupaca, Wis. The camp provides Junior members with a hands-on experience through various workshops revolving around the Registered Holstein cow.

A total of 70 junior members from around the state attended this year’s weekend-long Cow Camp. Campers spent the days attending stations focused on dairy judging, showmanship, hoof trimming, cow pregnancies, cow anatomy, show-day fundamentals and the Holstein registration process – both online and via paper.  Industry experts were in attendance to educate the campers on each of the topics.

The Junior Activities Committee and Holstein Royalty serve as camp counselors and coordinate all the details of the camp each year.  Along with the educational stations, Junior’s have time for fun activities as well. Highlights from the weekend included Farmer Olympics, a Princess scavenger hunt and bonfire.

Cow Camp rotates around the state of Wisconsin each year in order to be more accommodating to its membership base. Camp is open to any youth interested in the Registered Holstein cow under the age of 14. While at camp, Junior’s gain valuable knowledge on the industry and establish friendships with others with similar interests. The 2013 Cow Camp will be on located on the northwest side of the state.

The Association would like to thank our industry experts Jerry Bowman, Matt Dorshorst, Chris Lyons, Dave Selner and Angie Ulness as well as our event sponsors Badgerland Financial, Animart and East Central/Select Sires for their support.
